Discouraging and unrealistic
a Living With Fibromyalgia film review
This film portrays mainly very highly functioning people with FMS -- most of them have full-time jobs and one is a medical student! FMS presents differently in different people -- some patients have vastly worse symptoms than others. The film's final message is that if you're managing it proactively and just don't give up, you can beat FMS and have a productive life. I've been diagnosed with FMS for 18 years and I manage it very proactively (exercise, nutrition, massage, etc.), I have a good attitude about life, but I still can't work full-time. My husband has always been very supportive, but seeing this film may have raised more questions than it answered for him. If the FMS patients portrayed can be so active and productive, why can't I? The film presents a very one-sided rosy picture of living with this disease. I was terribly depressed after watching it. The film, especially in the final 10 minutes, seemed to be saying that if a patient was still really sick with FMS it was because he/she wasn't managing it well enough.

It is important for everyone to understand how FM affects people in different ways. From mild to severe - I think this film is the first of its kind and it will open the door to further discussion and documentaries. I think this post is important because it is a candid response from someone who's life has been deeply affected by FM. I hope to uncover many more stories that reflect the realities of life with FM - most importantly the range of debilitation.
